Mersing is a bustling sea-side town, where the past meets the present. Although quite modest in size, Mersing is serviced by a decent range of restaurants, cafes and old-school coffee shops.

There are also a few hotels, most of which can be booked here. These hotels offer decent rooms that come with reasonable internet speeds. Room rates are friendly.

You'll also find quite a few contemporary-type supermarkets and more traditional shop-houses, providing a whole spectrum of products and services, including everyday groceries, souvenirs, western meals and of course local fare, such as nasi padang, chicken rice and roti prata.

Most Malaysian banks also have branches in Mersing, so if you need an ATM machine, worry not, there's a number of them here.

Families with kids should know that there's a public park with playground facilities near the ferry jetty, great for those occasions where you have an hour or so to kill before your ferry departs to Tioman.

Going by taxi will be a bit more costly than going by bus. However, going by taxi has several benefits that a bus cannot offer. For one thing, passenger collection is any time you like and from any preferred pick-up point. And the taxi drops off passengers right at Mersing Harbour Centre.

I.e. the taxi service is door-to-door.

In addition, taxi passengers can remain in the vehicle during passport control whilst crossing the border into Malaysia and back. This privilege is not extended to bus passengers. All bus passengers have to disembark their bus, with their luggage, in order to walk to the Immigration complex escalators and then on to the passport control queuing area. This applies to both Singapore's passport control and Malaysia's too.

In other words, a taxi offers a fair amount more comfort and convenience. Good to know.
