Langkawi, the Jewel of KedahThe official name of the island of Langkawi is "Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah", or, in Malay, Langkawi Permata Kedah. Langkawi actually is an archipelago, a group of islands, located in the Andaman sea, about 30 km offshore from the Malaysia mainland, not too far from Penang. The Langkawi archipelago, all 100 separate little islands of it, are part of the Malaysian state of Kedah.

The biggest of Langkawi's islands is the eponymously-named Pulau Langkawi (pop. 65,000) with Kuah as its largest town. And, apart perhaps from Pulau Tioman, Langkawi is arguably Malaysia's best known holiday destination. Langkawi certainly is Malaysia's most ardently promoted holiday destination, and with good reason, given Langkawi's gorgeous long white sandy beaches, lush verdant jungle-covered hilly interior and rugged, almost iconic, mountain peaks. So bring your camera.
Langkawi's most popular beaches are found on its west coast. This part of Langkawi also offers a generous selection of restaurants and other kinds of eateries, as well as some of the finest resorts in Langkawi.
It may also be interesting to note that Langkawi is a duty-free island.
If you'd like to travel to Langkawi on a budget and you have the time, as well as an interest in quirky out-of-the-way bus terminals and delicious Malay food, not to mention simply stunning views from your window, then nothing beats taking the bus to Langkwai. Just select your current location in the drop-down below and choose "Alor Setar" as your destination. From Alor Setar, you can take a short taxi ride to Kuala Kedah, from where the Langkawi ferry will take you direct to Langkawi.
